BtVS - 3.11: Gingerbread

Original Air Date: January 12, 1999
Writer: Thania St. John, Jane Espenson
Director: James Whitmore Jr.
Picking the worst possible night for a surprise "mother-daughter bonding" visit with Buffy, Joyce is haunted by the discovery of two murdered children and feels compelled to take drastic action. When Giles suggests that the killings appear to be an occult sacrifice, Joyce rallies the entire adult population of Sunnydale behind a Salem-like witch hunt, leading the murderous mob directly to Willow and Buffy.
Me *Gandalf voice*: I have no memory of this place.

… I do understand Joyce, as a mother, wanting to know what slaying is like. But I do not understand Joyce, as a human being with a brain, not considering she’s putting herself in danger and making more work for Buffy.

And when Buffy tells her to stay put she… just walks around…

Oh wait!!! I do remember this!!!! I remember being super shocked and scared of this scene since they were showing dead kids on TV! It’s also very wrong, personally, to have Buffy parentified in this scene. We know she has more experience with death and this sort of thing, but yikes.

Ah, so this is the Satanic Panic episode. I was wondering when that was going to show up! And am a little surprised at myself for having deleted it from my mind almost entirely. I guess because, again, it involves kids and that’s something I tend to avoid.

Aaahh the awkward group scene. Nice to see Amy again!

… Can parents just walk into school spaces like that? That’s allowed?

Okay so. I understand Buffy’s perspective that when something supernatural happens, it’s best to keep it between people who are already in the known. HOWEVER, this was the murder of two children whose bodies were left in a public space and the police were called. We know the Sunnydale higher ups are aware of all the shit that goes on around town, but this would be difficult to hide anyway? Since I assume the kids belong to someone… DON’T THEY???? So why make it a big deal about Joyce calling people… Hmmmmm…

Willow’s mom! SMILING AT A VIGIL FOR DEAD KIDS! Buffy is now Bunny. We love to see it.

Confirmation the deaths were talked about in the paper so people do know about it.

Aaahh Joyce and Giles and the awkwardness between them. Just go make out some more.

… I love Joyce spreading the rumor that witches are involved in this. Like, way to go with keeping certain things a secret. Congrats. I do have one question, though: where are these kids’ parents???? Wouldn’t they be at the vigil??????????

Oh my god Joyce use your head for ONE SECOND. You know, it’s because of stuff like this that I have so many issues with her character ldjfsljfs I can’t help but think back to the West Memphis Three case while watching this episode. Ugh.

Amy and Willow doing witchy stuff that may or may not have stuff to do with dead kids!

Xander, shut up.

I have to pause the episode. I have all the issues in the world about police presence at schools and this is getting my blood pressure up lmao I’m going to skip the scene because it’s too much for me at the moment.

Also skipping the scene about them taking the library books. I can’t right now. Hits too close to what’s happening in some parts of the world.

“Mothers Opposed to the Occult.” Joyce. Joyce. Joyce.

I have to skip the scene of Willow with her mom as well because ALL OF THIS IS TOO UPSETTING. Congrats to the writers for creating an episode that makes me want to hurl and also commit murder.

Way to dismiss everything your daughter’s done and has been through. Thanks, Joyce.

Hey, ghost kids!

And Angel!

Very interesting question from Buffy re Sunnydale being any better since she came to town. We know 100% that it is due to the Wishverse episode. Sunnydale without Buffy is apocalyptic. What she’s doing matters.

Go Buffy for FINALLY realizing there’s something weird about the kid situation!!!! WHERE ARE THEIR PARENTS??? WHAT ARE THEIR NAMES??? WHERE DO THEY COME FROM????

Willow’s mom is so disconnected from her own daughter that she grounded her and didn’t take away her access to her laptop. Amazing.

Oh damn! These kids have been dying for years and years and years.

SNEAK OUT THE WINDOW, WILLOW. SAVE YOURSELF!

Interesting take of having demons that feed from watching peaceful communities destroy each other. If only that was the case in real life… Here we don’t have demons, just regular piece of shit human beings :)

Thank you, Cordelia, for being your amazing self.

I know burning people at the stake is bad and I should be concerned and upset etc but what really gets me about this scene is that they’re going to light Amy, Willow, and Buffy on fire INSIDE. With a bunch of books around them. Everyone is going to die of smoke inhalation before the fire spreads and gets to them.

Oh hey! Amy’s a little rat. And nice to see the black eyeballs we’re going to become so familiar with.

Little ghost kids are now one big demon guy! That dies in an underwhelming way.

I’m glad Willow mentions the selective memory thing re their moms. I’m not a fan of moms traumatizing their kids once again being brushed off in this show like their actions have no consequences. But I guess that’s TV for you.
