BtVS - 3.18: Earshot

Original Air Date: September 21, 1999
Writer: Jane Espenson
Director: Regis Kimble
A near-fatal run-in with a pair of oozy, mouthless demons unexpectedly leaves Buffy with the awesome ability to hear other people's thoughts, but this newfound power ultimately threatens to overwhelm and destroy her as the cacophony of thoughts isolates her from the rest of the world and drives her to the brink of insanity. When Buffy's clairvoyance unearths a potential mass murder plan at the school, Giles, Willow and the rest of the gang spring into action to locate the would-be killer and thwart a schoolyard massacre, while Angel endeavors to keep Buffy from spiraling into telepathy-induced madness.
I do so very much enjoy episodes that start with some action! Even more so when suspicious bodily fluids splatter on Buffy and obviously hint of shenanigans.

Good to know the research keeps going in regard to the Mayor’s Ascension, even if it wields little result for the time being. Wes’s little dash run is so so funny dfslfjlsjflsf

Once again, I’m tired of the conversations involving Buffy questioning if Angel really likes her and/or if he’s involved with someone else. I don’t think I ever enjoyed this kind of relationship drama, even during my first watch of the show. This makes even less sense to me since Angel being with Faith was a plan they came up with together.

We’re on the demon rash and how it can infect the host with some demon powers!

It is nice seeing some normal school activities like the cheerleaders and Willow talking about the game. Sunnydale High is so filled with monsters and bad stuff that it’s cool when they show students in class and/or doing normal school-related stuff. We had that a lot during the first season, but kind of stepped away from it as the show progressed.

Rolling my eyes real hard at the Buffy/Angel Faith convo. Stop iiiittt. Angel telling Buffy he’s tracking her: not creepy at all!

“Man, you’ve read my mind.” DUN DUN DUN DUUUUUUUUN.

Of course Buffy and Giles only stop to think about the positive elements of Buffy now being a mind reader. I love that Buffy immediately uses her new power not to slay demons, but to participate in class lol

Also! Production tidbit: this episode was aired some months after the season finale due to the subject matter (I think we can all guess where it’s going with Freddy’s introduction) and Columbine.

Kind of yucky for Angel to keep referring to the (I assume) women he’s been with as “girls”. This really strikes the squick in me regarding the age gap when we have him reminding Buffy he’s lived a long time and that he’s done bad “girls” before and that’s not what he wants at the moment. He wants a “good girl”. Yucky.

Cordelia saying exactly what she’s thinking <33333

Wesley and Cordelia: also yucky.

“If it doesn’t go away, she’ll go insane.” And we get to the negative part of being a mind reader!

It’s so eerie that this episode was set to air a week after Columbine ended up happening. Xander saying he’s having trouble with the fact someone would do something like that while Oz points out this is bordering on trendy… Fucked up.

(I did a 5min research and shootings have been happening in USAmerican schools since the 1800s…. What in the hell??????)

On an abrupt change of tone: JOYCE HAD SEX WITH GILES. WE GOT CONFIRMATION, PEOPLE. IT WAS THE CANDY.

Once again, Angel has to be the one to fight and find a way to recover that mysterious ingredient/object etc etc to save the day and/or someone. Go Angel!

Oh, Jonathan :(((((((

The Freddy fake-out with the review and Oz just being like “that’s fair” is so??? And I love that they talk about Buffy being able to read minds in front of the NEWSPAPER GUY.

Buffy episodes that show evil also comes from human beings are so poignant. We don’t need to believe in vampires and demons and other monsters to have bad things happen. Humans are capable of doing terrible things to each other already.

Then they turn that into a boy suffering and wanting to take his own life, with Buffy reminding him that he’s not alone, and switch it to a more comedic tone with Xander and the jello and the rat poison… The whiplash.

But all’s well that ends well. Even with Buffy reminding Giles she knows he boinked her mom!
