BtVS - 3.22: Graduation Day Part II

Original Air Date: July 13, 1999
Writer: Joss Whedon
Director: Joss Whedon
As the hours tick away to the fateful graduation of Sunnydale High School's Class of 1999, the impending doom of the Mayor's ascension and transformation into pure demon hangs heavy with Buffy. With Angel near death, Buffy must risk her own life and defy the orders of the Watchers Council in order to lead a campaign to save the world.
We’re back for more suffering!

This episode picks up exactly where the previous one left off. I do like that we’re able to see how affected Buffy is by what just happened. There are no words from her, but her expression and the way she moves and holds herself speaks about her feelings regarding her actions and stabbing Faith.

The Mayor, concerned… Hmmmmmm.

Cordelia once again proving she’s not at all dumb. She’s always able to realize whenever something serious is going on and demands answers. Even if it’s for somewhat self-centered reasons like not wanting Wesley to leave the country because she wants to date him…

Delirious Angel! How can he sweat if he’s dead? Also, I love that he thought Oz was Buffy lmao I wish we would have seen that instead of the Willow scene.

Willow! We’re allowed to find joy in the middle of utter chaos and destruction. No need to feel guilty about it.

Buffy not at all in the right headspace as she forces Angel to bite her. :/

I’m really not into this scene at the hospital with Angel and the Mayor and the unconscious Slayers. I do like Buffy and Faith meeting in limbo or whatever the heck they are. Faith telling Buffy to take what she needs???? They should have kissed.

FOREHEAD KISSES ARE LOVE!!!

Every time Buffy almost dies or actually dies? She comes back ready to kick some ass.

Okay, this is when the episode really amps up the tension and I get totally hooked. The pieces are all coming together and we knoooooooow things are going to get messy. Buffy and the rest of the gang are setting heir plan into motion while the Mayor is also getting organized. Aaaaahhhhh!!!

Wesley and Cordelia: so much yikes even they couldn’t continue with it!

GRADUATION DAY IS HEEEEEERE!!! Snyder with the empowering words. Mayor Wilkins not shutting up. Darkness!

I ALWAYS GET CHILLS WHEN BUFFY YELLS “NOW” AND THE GRADUATING CLASS OF 1999 TAKES OFF THEIR ROBES TO FIGHT!!!!! They’re tired of this shit and they’re not about to let themselves become snacks to an evil snake monster!!!!!

More than anything, this is what it feels like to finish and graduate high school. We all fought and vanquished the evil snake monster. Some of us were lost on the way, but those who reached the ending? We’ve done Enough and we’re Tired.

Angel, Wesley, and the jocks? HELL YEAH.

Aw, Harmony. We’ll be seeing you again! Jonathan taking down a vampire: best scene. Cordelia in PERFECT FORM staking a vampire brings me so much happiness.

Okay, but I had entirely deleted from my brain that this is how they defeated the Mayor lmao I get the feeling that maybe Whedon didn’t like high school all that much…

Really happy they had Angel lurking around one final time. I do wish Buffy had been the one to turn around and walk away, but I understand it’s better to have Angel be the one to do it. This doesn’t leave any doubts about his decision to move away and let Buffy have the life she deserves.

And we’ve reached the end of the episode! I love that Giles is the one to hand Buffy her, I assume fake, diploma. School has been such a struggle for her while being the Slayer and here is the proof! that she did it. To also have the gang all together, sitting around and taking a moment to acknowledge that they survived not only the battle, but high school? It closes the episode in a sweet and hopeful tone <3
