Buffy and Giles face a demon spirit who has been trapped since the Dark Ages and is unleashed into cyberspace. Meanwhile, Willow has fallen for a cyber-beau whom she met online and Xander and Buffy are wary of who this anonymous wooer may turn out to be.

Being honest: this is not an episode I enjoy. I appreciate trying a new thing with a flashback at the very beginning, but I’m not sure it works quite as intended. It gives us answers about what the gang will be dealing with and that takes some of the suspense out of the story.

We have Jenny Calendar’s introduction! I love that she already pokes fun at Giles and how disconnected, no pun intended, he is from technology use. And Giles’ reply about people becoming slaves to “the idiot box” is A Lot in hindsight considering how we rely on tech today.

The episode does bring up an interesting point regarding demons being able to exist inside a computer lol It also makes one think about how parts of the internet are, indeed, like hell. I don’t think the show was trying to make a comment on that, but upon rewatch? That’s what comes to mind.

Also curious to see Buffy’s reaction to Willow having an online friend/crush! There’s been so much change in the past couple of decades when it comes to the acceptance of people meeting online and that turning into something more—either that be a friendship or an actual romantic relationship.

Buffy calling out Xander for being jealous! Go her! Xander does bring up a good point about what we now call catfishing. That is a real concern, unfortunately.

The dated technology questions from Buffy and Giles’ fear of it sure are something of the times, huh. I think this is one of the reasons that contribute to me disliking this episode now. Even more so with how Fritz and Dave act throughout the episode.

Jenny finally being the person who questions Buffy and Xander’s presence at the library all the time! Thank you for being amazing, Jenny. Her and Giles antagonizing each other is also great.

Giles connecting the dots between Dave and Fritz acting strange and the blank demon book! I always love Buffy being so quick to figure out what’s going on like Moloch being inside the computers. It shows how smart she is, time and time again.

THE PIXELATION OF THAT MOLOCH APPEARANCE! Those were some trying times and we didn’t even know.

Okay, the coolest thing in this episode is probably all the background stuff about how Moloch is going around messing with other computer systems? Like the allergy records at school and then world finances and serial killer profiles.

JENNY KNOWING ABOUT STUFF AND THINGS! I love her.

Seeing physical form Moloch just makes me think about all of the MCU Ultron memes kfjsljflsf People were so right to say they look so much like each other.

I always find Moloch’s defeat underwhelming. They go through the entire ritual online (also, yay for the sense of community between online pagans!) for him to then… explode like that. The one part I like about this is Willow actually having a chance to hit him.

Jenny and Giles having an interaction where they don’t antagonize each other is pretty sweet. I’m not a big fan of Giles’ talk about smells, though.

The final scene with Buffy and Xander trying to cheer Willow up and then making themselves sad is so funny. But it does makes one think about their relationships throughout the show and how they acknowledged, here, that they were doomed.
