BtVS - 1.09: The Puppet Show
Original Air Date: May 5, 1997
Writer: Rob Des Hotel, Dean Batali
Director: Ellen S. Pressman
This is one of the episodes I have very little memory of and, right at the opening scene, I figured out why: ventriloquist doll! Goosebumps made me terrified of them as a kid and that’s a fear I still hold today, so I think I blocked this entire episode from my mind? And always skipped it on rewatches. Let’s see how I do with that today.
Cordelia, such an amazing singer.
First mention of principal Snyder! And it already makes it out to be a pretty difficult person to work with, considering how Giles refers to him. The gang making fun of Giles for being forced to run the talent show is wonderful.
Speak of the devil and he shall appear: Snyder! He very much establishes himself right from the get go as a tough principal. I do like the introduction of a new point of conflict that his character brings, even more so considering how many supernatural things happen at the school. Also, the casual mention of Principal Flutie being eaten is wild to me.
DUMMIES DEFINITELY STILL GIVE ME THE WIG! I feel you, Buffy.
Too bad Miss Congeniality still wasn’t a thing, otherwise Buffy, Willow, and Xander could have demonstrated some self-defense moves for the talent show! That would have been fun :D
Snyder: Kids. I don’t like them. — as a teacher, sometimes, same lmao
Buffy once again being the person with suspicions that are right on the money! It makes me wonder if situations like this are always her Slayer senses tingling.
Morgan outright saying it’s Sid that’s all mad. I would have clocked that evil doll so fast. I really hate this sdfjslf they creep me out so so so much.
Oooohh, okay. Staff touching kids like Snyder just grabbed Buffy is a big no-no! He would have gotten fired so fast where I live. I do like him sneaking around and waiting to catch students Being Bad. It’s like he’s a second thing we need to worry about in addition to all the evil creatures lurking around. It adds tension!
Joyce! Realizing there’s something up with Buffy and asking her about it and then believing whatever Buffy tells her… I do think she’s just seeing what she wants to see at this point and may prefer to live in ignorance.
THAT DUMMY JUMPSCARE!!!! I was doing my nails and fucked up my nail polish gOD I HATE DOLLS
Back to Joyce, she comes running when Buffy screams but then it doesn’t occur to her that something might have gotten inside the house through the open window???? What’s up with that.
You know what? They should believe Buffy. When has she been wrong about these sorts of things? Not ever. Pay attention to what the Slayer tells you!
I hate Sid so muuuuuuuuch. If I was Xander I would have destroyed the doll. It’s what he deserves for being so damn creepy. Ugh. I know Nightmares is the next episode, but this one is the nightmare fuel for me. I hate it.
I’d totally forgotten that Sid twist??? Still hate him, though.
Fun cut to Willow and then Giles “being the smartest person around”. And then Giles, the smartest person, lying down for a guillotine demonstration by a teenage student. Really? Is the demon sure he wants that brain?
The ending with the curtains opening was great, though.

Sunnydale High School's annual talent show serves as a backdrop for murder when Buffy must catch a knife-wielding stealer of human organs. Meanwhile, the new principal is a discipline-loving brute who forces Giles to run the talent show and orders Buffy, Xander, and Willow to perform.
