BtVS - 1.12: Prophecy Girl

Original Air Date: June 2, 1997
Writer: Joss Whedon
Director: Joss Whedon
Buffy wants to resign from her life of slaying when Giles uncovers an ancient prophesy that spells out her deadly fate, as the Master's ascension from the Hellmouth is at hand. As the earth begins to crack open, Xander, Willow and Cordelia face an army of demons and the prophetic end of the world. Meanwhile, Xander finally asks Buffy to the prom with equally disastrous consequences.
The season finale is upon us!

The episode starts with a fake out scene between Willow and Xander where Xander is not! confessing his feelings for Willow and is instead practicing what to say to Buffy. It is a bit painful to watch, especially when he starts going on about mating rituals lol

The contrast once again of Buffy slaying while Cordelia is in a car making out with a boy. Regular teenage life vs Slayer life! I do admit I’m glad we’re back to Buffy fighting vampires. The last few episodes were dedicated to other sorts of creatures and I missed watching baddies turn to dust.

…Giles reciting some obscure writings like that’s a good thing. My dude. That’s how we accidentally cast a spell or something. This is the first big scene we get about how the prophecy regarding the Master and the Slayer isn’t exactly encouraging, considering Giles’ reaction.

And then an earthquake! The amount of structural damage at the library, damn.

Once again, the Master is so campy. I do love him as the first bad guy Buffy has to fight in a season finale. I remember thinking he was so scary back then. Now I’m like: this is the funniest character in the entire show.

I find it very British of Giles to refuse to talk to Buffy in this scene and/or show any sort of emotion whatsoever. Like that’s going to help with anything.

I cannot watch Xander confessing to Buffy and asking her to go to the dance with him. It gives me so much secondhand embarrassment despite me being happy this wasn’t dragged out forever and ever. And then I get so angry when Xander makes that totally unnecessary comment about Angel. Ugh.

I love Jenny so much. She’s such a good balance to Giles and the plot always moves forward when she’s around. Her rightfully pointing out to Giles that he can trust her based on her actions is also wonderful.

Willow is fantastic at explaining her feelings to Xander when he suggests they go to the dance together instead. I find it takes a lot of strength to say something like that to someone we have feelings for.

The paaaaain of Buffy catching Giles and Angel discussing the prophecy and us all finding out about it: Buffy will face the Master and she will die. I always tear up when Buffy asks, “Do you think it’ll hurt?” There is so much fear and anger behind her tone and on her face and it hits me right in the heart.

This is one of those moments where we’re all reminded that Buffy is a kid. She’s 16. She’s supposed to have her entire life ahead of her. SMG’s performance is heartbreaking.

The iconic dress! This is a nice scene between Buffy and Joyce. Joyce encouraging Buffy to do what she likes in this particular situation hits pretty close to some of Buffy’s feelings and I think it helps her a little bit to deal with what’s going on.

Another massacre at the High School! As usual!

Willow and Buffy talking about what happened at the school is pretty interesting, in a way. Sometimes, we only realize how bad some things are when they happen to us/affect us directly. That shouldn’t be the case, but… Willow shows that in this scene.

And it is when the evil stuff affects one of her best friends that Buffy makes the decision to do what she has to.

We got a little bit more information about the prophecy and what’s bound to happen from Jenny and Giles. We also come to understand how the Anointed One is supposed to lead Buffy towards her end.

Giles being willing to find the Master so Buffy doesn’t have to? It warms my heart and also makes me sad. Buffy deals with that in her own way, though!

Buffy lets herself be led by the creepy kid while Xander swallows his pride and hurt feelings and goes to Angel for help. I do like all of the gang getting together to find a way out of this. It makes it pretty clear they all care about Buffy as a person instead of just as the Slayer.

Buffy in the cave/Hellmouth with her crossbow! It is unsettling to have only the Master’s voice all around her. You know, this would be a good time for Buffy to do the listening thing she learned in the last episode. Since she can’t see the Master and all.

Prophecies are tricky creatures! At the time, I remember being so damn shocked when the Master said that. I feel like that’s something that’s become so common nowadays? Of course the prophecy is not going to tell you everything.

They find Buffy with her hair suddenly loose! How odd. I do appreciate Xander putting his brain cells together and realizing Buffy has a shot if they do CPR. Knowing basic life support stuff saves lives!

The vampire surrounding the school—and Willow and Jenny—with Cordelia coming to the rescue with her car is a turn of events. Her driving through the school hallways is also such a Cordelia thing, in a way lol

Are those tentacles in the library??

THE THEME SONG PLAYING! BUFFY GOING TO FUCK THINGS UP IN HER GORGEOUS DRESS! WE LOVE TO SEE IT!

Lmao Cordelia biting a vampire I just. Of course she would.

LMAO THE MASTER SOFTLY CLAPPING AT THE CHAOS AND DESTRUCTION what a creature. The fight with Buffy is a liiiittle underwhelming upon rewatch? It’s pretty straight-forward up until she throws him through the glass, he gets staked, and the Hellmouth closes.

There are many questions left open with the end of this season. The big one: Buffy died, so was a new Slayer called? And the Hellmouth is now closed, but still there! Can we expect more trouble from it?

Season 1 is the shortest Buffy season and yet it does so much to establish the characters, the plot, and the lore. It’s pretty incredible that these 12 episodes gave so much life to Buffy as a character to the point we got so many seasons of the show. The season finale, especially, managed to give a satisfying conclusion to the main arc while still leaving me wanting more!

And it makes sense: they saved the world, so let’s party!

Vampires Slayed: 5 (3 on screen + 2 mentioned). I am counting the Master as a vampire!
Series Total: 17.

Giles Taking Off/Putting On Glasses: 3.
