BtVS - 2.08: The Dark Age

Original Air Date: November 10, 1997
Writer: Dean Batali, Rob Des Hotel
Director: Bruce Seth Green
Giles' quiet existence in Sunnydale is jeopardized when a murder victim, who is found to be linked to Giles' past, is discovered on the steps of the school library. Meanwhile, when the Mark of Eyghon — a demon that takes possession of a dead host — takes over Ms. Calendar, Buffy and Angel discover the one way to save her soul.
We start the episode with some nervous guy in a suit asking for Giles! Already suspicious. Also… how do USAmerican schools work that teachers would be in the school building late at night? I’m out of there as soon as I can.

Giles is so grumpy and out of touch with youth culture. I love and relate to him.

Meanwhile, nervous suit guy gets murdered! By blue jello?

Giles is the one having nightmares now! Kind of weird to see him in pajamas lol And his bed looks so tiny??

“A twosome of cuteness.” I agree with Xander re Jenny and Giles. They are very cute! Jenny trying to make him squirm with the book destroying talk is so mean, though. Poor book!

A KISS! THEY KISSED! And then the police say Giles has to come with them?? This is why we can’t have nice things.

Okay so… don’t morgues usually keep the body the other way around in the little cabinet? So they don’t have to pull the entire thing out like the dude just did here? Just questions that come up.

Giles knows the dude and we already know he’s aware of the tattoo because of his nightmare! What could all of this mean??? It’s so interesting that the writers finally figured out what sort of backstory to give him and now we get to see it be revealed, piece by piece.

Everyone knows about blood delivery day! Except us, who found out about it now. It does make sense that vampires would have ways to get blood that don’t involve chomping on people. Shouldn’t Buffy be happy about that?

I have another cultural question: I always see in movies and TV shows people use that little handle to knock on the door? Are doorbells not that common? Do productions do away with them because of the sound?

Giles all scruffy and rumpled as he figures out people he knows are dying! And we have confirmation that he has the same tattoo as dead guy. It seems like only him and Ethan are still alive? Interesting.

“When are we gonna need computers in real life, anyway?” Oh, Xander. If only you knew.

Ethan is back! Snooping around. It’s from him through Buffy that we first hear about Mark of Eyghon. And we have him hiding behind Buffy when someone bursts through a window in the library—so brave of him tbqh.

Cordelia being the one to kick Ethan and take him to the ground, successfully keeping him from getting away, is so damn funny. Sometimes, the simplest action has the desired result.

Giles showing his Ripper side! And in the mess, the blue blob got Jenny! Doesn’t it only take people who are dead, though??????????

Willow cleared it up for me! It’s “unconscious host” and not only a dead person, ok. Thank you, Willow :D

Damn, possessed Jenny and Giles. Them kissing does make me uncomfortable considering the consent questions being possessed raises. And then she fucks Giles up \o/

We get a little bit about Giles’ past as a bad boy who loved the occult. It’s a big contrast seeing him totally disorganized and basically falling to pieces due to what’s happening. It’s a good way to make sure the audience knows Giles also made—and makes—mistakes.

And then we have Ethan being Ethan (derogatory). And Willow being Willow
(affectionate).

Was it really as easy as to just… fuck up your tattoo? Then no blue blob trying to kill you? Why did no one think of that before? Would cover up tattoos work? Would scars?

Oh damn, I had zero memory of Angel being the one to choke Jenny out so she’d fall unconscious and the blue blob would jump hosts. Go Angel! Now the girlies (demons!) are fighting inside of Angel!

Of course Ethan runs away like a little rat. At least Giles gets to take Jenny home… but it’s understandable she needs some time to come to terms with what happened to her and Giles’ involvement in it. Still sad :(

I do love Buffy telling Giles that she’s so used to seeing him as a grown up and then finds out he’s a person, just like everyone else. It does give them some common ground and a sense of understanding they didn’t have before and that’s lovely.
