BtVS - 2.13: Surprise
Original Air Date: January 19, 1998
Writer: Marti Noxon
Director: Michael Lange
Buffy brings up a good point that no body = no death. We did see Dru alive, but it’s always important to remember that this is a recurring situation in several shows. Some who have done fakeouts better than others…
Some sweet kissy kissy moments between Angel and Buffy! We haven’t had one single moment of angst or anything between them in a few episodes… Suspicious.
I remember tween me getting all giggly and giddy at Buffy and Willow’s “seize it” conversation. It was such a “grown up” conversation that danced around the subject of sex while still very much making it understood. As an adult, I do still get a little “aw” about it because of the friendship and girlhood aspect. But then I remember Angel is a grown man…………
Both tween me and adult me do think Willow and Oz scenes are so cute, though! There’s so much of Willow discovering this part of herself and her confidence and I love how sweet and openly communicative Oz is with her.
Giles says he’s sure it’s nothing re Buffy’s Drusilla dream. WHEN HAS IT EVER BEEN NOTHING?
We have some dynamics reversal with Spike and Drusilla! With Spike now being the one who needs some assistance. I believe the scars and wheelchair are supposed to make us think of him as the “weak one” right now, but I don’t like those implications.
Does Buffy ever get her driver’s license??????
A Suspicious Figure! Who seems to know Jenny and considers her a part of their people. I remember being very confused about this backstory when I first watched the show? I guess because it sort of came out of nowhere like Giles being the Ripper, as if the writers suddenly had an idea of what to do with a character when they hadn’t before.
To think Drusilla isn’t the one they need to worry about at the moment in relation to Angel :(
Buffy literally crashing into her own surprise birthday party and slaying a vampire is the most on brand ever. And now Oz is aware of what’s going on! I love that he’s just like: this explains a lot.
Ah, sentient body parts! This kind of reminds me of MDZS/The Untamed with their fierce corpses. I am a big fan of dismembered evil parts coming together to become one big evil being.
Of course the universe comes together to separate Buffy and Angel once again \o/ I have the most vivid memory of the scene where Angel gives her that ring. I was obsessed with this little moment and dreamed about a person giving me my own Claddagh ring.
Pause for me to laugh at Angel saying “my people” like the Irish don’t exist anymore.
… Buffy got thrown in the water and her hair is all dry… @ Production team, please explain.
Drusilla has completed the demon puzzle! She’s already more competent than all previous bad guys.
“This one is full of feeling. He reads.” RELATABLE CONTENT.
Please, Buffy and Angel, did y’all really think you wouldn’t be caught?? Like damn, use your brain cells to come up with a better way to spy on people.
Aaaahhh, getting wet in the rain and going to your significant other’s place so you can warm up. Another scene I used to be obsessed with, wishing it was meeeeeee. As an adult, I can’t understand why Angel didn’t let Buffy take a hot shower? And why he followed her into the room like that?
The drama, the angst, the sadness, the life or death of it all. I ate it uuuuup when I was younger.
Big question: how did Buffy not wake up when Angel gasped that hard? He got dressed and went out and didn’t think to call the Slayer to help him? Not until he was outside with the thunder and rain? Tsk.
Good cliffhanger, though!

Drusilla: This will be the best party ever.
Writer: Marti Noxon
Director: Michael Lange
The fate of the world is at stake when Spike and Drusilla gather the dismembered body parts of The Judge — a demon with a deadly touch — from the ends of the earth as their ultimate weapon to extinguish The Slayer. Meanwhile, Angel's ability to feel human emotion is in jeopardy when he and Buffy share an intimate moment which threatens to destroy his soul.We know the episode is going to be good when it starts with Buffy having a weird dream! I’m so happy to see Drusilla again :D
