BtVS - 3.03: Faith, Hope & Trick
Original Air Date: October 13, 1998
Writer: David Greenwalt
Director: James A. Contner
Still don’t understand why she can’t get her GED…
… Xander just calling Buffy a slut for no fucking reason, huh? What a great start.
Mr. Trick! I do like him coming right out and saying Sunnydale is hella white. And of course he’s there to help kill the Slayer. As all bad guys.
Forever sad and upset about Buffy’s Angel nightmares. Trauma is really tough and, while I do appreciate the way in which the show doesn’t just move on and ignore the sacrifice she made, I also hate that no one seems to understand just what it took Buffy to do what she did.
WHY ARE THEY ONLY WORRYING ABOUT A BINDING SPELL FOR ACATHLA NOW???? Dear god, writers room. Do better.
I do like that we’re seeing a continuation of Willow talking about her practices! There’s an early warning here from Giles that magic isn’t to be played with. Guess that wasn’t a concern for Jenny since she was an adult and not (supposed to be) impulsive?
Shoutout to this episode’s band: Darling Violetta!
FAITH! DANCING! Not at all to the proper rhythm of the song, but still.
This time the new Slayer knows who Buffy is! An interesting turn of events since Buffy wasn’t warned about Faith in any way at all. The Watchers Council needs better communication tbh.
Thank you to Cordelia for explaining how Slayer succession works for those who don’t remember.
Really, though: how does Faith know so much about Buffy while Buffy didn’t know a new Slayer had been called? Did we get an answer to this?
Also, I do think the writers could have done better than this sort of rivalry/jealousy thing between Faith and Buffy. It is a big contrast with Buffy and Kendra’s relationship, which I understand, but like… isn’t the show supposed to be about female empowerment and whatnot? What’s empowering about any of this…
Okay, that’s such a weird scene between Buffy and Joyce with Buffy telling her mom how a new Slayer is called and Joyce’s almost non-reaction to it. Considering how much Joyce has freaked out about things in the past, this is such a weird choice for her character.
And we see Faith has some anger management issues. Who woulda thunk it.
A TWIST! Faith’s Watcher is dead! We do know what happens when a Slayer dies, but when a Watcher dies? Mystery.
Faith saying she’s the one who can handle this when she’s the one who came to Sunnydale to meet Buffy in the first place. Why so many things in this episode don’t make seeeeeense?
I do like that we find out Faith’s Watcher was a woman! We get so used to Giles and then other male Watchers that it’s nice to know women are also part of the Council. Not so nice that this comes with a woman dying off-screen and not even getting a name, however.
Mr. Trick, the only one talking sense the entire episode.
SO UNDERWHELMING the way khaki trousers gets slayed. That’s really all it took? Really?
Finally Buffy tells them about Angel having his soul back!!!! Thank you!!! I wish Willow had at least gotten up and given her a hug, though.
… there is no spell… just an attempt by Giles to get Buffy to talk about what happened…

Giles: You must realize, Buffy, that you and Faith have very different temperaments.
Buffy: Yeah, and mine is the sane one.

Just as Buffy tries to return to her normal life of going to school, hanging out with friends and saving the world, she is faced with the arrival of an ancient, cloven-hoofed villain and his blood-sucking sidekick, Mr. Trick. Another new Sunnydale arrival, Faith, helps Buffy in her battle against the unspeakable demons and ingratiates herself into every aspect of Buffy's life. It’s been a little while since we’ve had an episode introducing an iconic character, but here we are again! Although the episode does start with senior year and the gang commenting on Buffy’s lack of student status.

I see what you're saying entirely but it works for me. Even as a Buffy/Faith shipper, I think there's a ton of big sister/little sister, sibling-rivalry energy to their dynamic at times (especially when it comes to Faith taking/trying on her stuff) and Buffy's such an only child.

It's so bittersweet; I love that he did that.
