BtVS - 3.06: Band Candy

Original Air Date: November 10, 1998
Writer: Jane Espenson
Director: Michael Lange
Buffy is forced to grow up even faster when Mr. Trick executes a devious plot to render the town defenseless by causing Sunnydale's adult population to inexplicably behave as irresponsible adolescents. Meanwhile, Buffy struggles to keep Angel's return and recovery a secret while her mom and Giles conspire to schedule her 24 hours a day.
Let me start out by saying this is one of my favorite episodes in the series! Not necessarily in terms of plot, but definitely in terms of laughs and entertainment :D

We open the episode with Giles and Buffy at the cemetery with Giles helping Buffy study for the SATs! It’s a cozy reminder that Buffy still has to deal with all of the regular teenage rite of passage moments in addition to her Slayer duties.

Mr. Trick and the Mayor are, once again, scheming. I appreciate that we have two bad guys this season that are so different from each other. The contrast helps with establishing that demons aren’t the only people who commit evil acts.

Cordelia saying she does well on standardized tests and asking if she can’t have layers: love.

Selling stuff to raise money for uniforms is another thing beyond my cultural understanding! We only really raise money for graduation parties here. I’ve had to sell many raffles and cupcakes in my day.

Not testing well is so relatable <3 And I still don’t enjoy Joyce being on Buffy’s case about having run away when Joyce is the one who kicked her out…

Oooohhh, Buffy is not telling the truth!

Since coming back, I think we’ve seen more of Angel with his shirt off than on???? Something to think about. And the tension in these sceeeeeenes, heeeeelp!

And of course Buffy gets caught on her lie :B This is what happens when you keep a secret from everyone you know!

Once again, I do not like this conversation between Buffy, Joyce, and Giles. She’s expected to be able to handle the life and death situations of being the Slayer. She left home after being kicked out and kept herself housed and fed during an entire summer. Suddenly, she isn’t able to make her own decisions???? Someone explain.

Something is wrong with the band candy: ooooohhhhh who would have thunk it?

Ugh, Willow and Xander. Why.

GILES SMOKING? JOYCE DRINKING? I wonder what is going ooonn 👀

The acting from ASH as he seems to turn into a completely different person after the candy. The mannerisms, the voice, the way he holds himself. Incredible.

Buffy realizing the adults are all acting like teenagers and Willow immediately denying she acts like that dlfjsldfjlsfsf To think! adults were teenagers once and made all of the mistakes that made them grow and change and learn as people.

Snyder joining the gang is so fucking funny dlfksldjfsljfdlsdjflsdf And I do love Giles and Joyce hanging out and walking around and COMMITTING CRIMES.

Buffy catching her mom and Giles making out and Buffy having to mother her is just!!!!!

ETHAN RAAAAAAAYNE THERE YOU ARE and sure, he tells everything to Buffy and how he’s just the middle-man in this collecting tributes to a demon situation. Funny how nothing is ever his fault :D

Oh no, the tributes are babies?????????? I had deleted this from my mind.

Lurconis big snek? It’s really cool that the show wasn’t afraid of coming out with the big special effects every once in a while. It is underwhelming to have Buffy just set fire to the big snake demon, though.

Mr. Trick, once again, escapes \o/ And we get to see that maybe there’s more to Mayor Wilkins than we previously thought.

Aw, poor Joyce and Giles being so awkward around each other. Embrace the making out!
