BtVS - 3.08: Lovers Walk
Original Air Date: November 24, 1998
Writer: Dan Vebber
Director: David Semel
This does raise an interesting question about a vampire’s ability to get drunk? It seems like Spike is smashed from drinking regular human alcohol and not like… absorbing it through someone’s blood or something.
I can’t help but find Oz and Willow/Oz so cute??? He’s a pretty great first boyfriend for someone to have. Of course the show has to ruin it in some way. No girls deserve happiness here.
Giles going camping??? I cannot imagine. Also! Interesting theme throughout the episode so far of Buffy’s SAT scores and thoughts of her future. It’s no wonder she’s uncertain about the possibility of going to college when it’s been hammered into her that she’s the Slayer and that’s the most important responsibility. The point Giles makes about Faith being around and Buffy moving on, for a time, is a good one.
Once again, I’m going to skip the Xander and Willow scene. I don’t have the patience for it.
Aaaahh, Spike lurking. We know where he got that from. He’s such a sad sack without Drusilla, which, I understand. She’s pretty great.
I’m not in favor of spells that mess with people’s free will, so I’m not here for Willow’s anti-love spell. Very convenient that Spike is in the shop, DURING THE DAY, and able to hear that such a thing exists.
Mayor Wilkins! We have confirmation he’s sold his soul. Makes sense. He also seems very much aware of who comes in and out of Sunnydale—Mr. Trick, now Spike. I appreciate the competence.
Angel and Buffy talk about her going to college and Angel asks a big question: what reason is there for her to stay? Of course Buffy comes back to her slayer duties, even though we know she was to tell Angel he’s the reason. Buffy… he could follow u to college. Now that isn’t likely considering they can’t be honest with each other about their feelings.
Eeeehhh, big yikes at Willow and the spell without Xander’s consent. I do like how this informs Willow’s character arc when it comes to magic. We know she struggles with limits when it comes to magic and this scene is good to show that.
… Spike wants a love spell to make Dru love him again. Honestly? Spike is such a pathetic little man sometimes. And Willow hesitating to cast that spell when she was not hesitating at all about the anti-love spell sure is intriguing. Are spells like that only allowed if they serve her in some way?
SDLFJLSDJFLSDF OK BUT I LOVE THE JOYCE AND SPIKE FRIENDSHIP!!! You can pry that from my cold dead hands. This is such a funny scene with Spike taunting Angel. If only they knew he was just there wanting some little marshmallows and whine about Dru leaving him.
Oz’s werewolf nose coming to the rescue!
Okay, time for one of my fave lines in Buffy history because of what it means to me personally: “You’re not friends. You’ll never be friends. You’ll be in love until it kills you both. You’ll fight, and you’ll shag, and you’ll hate each other until it makes you quiver, but you’ll never be friends. Love isn’t brains, children. It’s blood. Blood screaming inside you to work its will. I may be love’s bitch, but at least I’m man enough to admit it.” Teenage me felt that so much. Adult me is like: that goes hard but I’m glad I learned to let go.
NOT AT ALL A FAN of what happens when we cut to Willow and Xander again. I like that Willow is trying to get them out of there instead of just sitting around. I do not like that they decide to make out, their shitty behavior finally comes to light, and Cordelia and Oz get hurt in the process.
Spike not having any friends in the Sunnydale vampire community is also kind of funny lol He could have tried a little harder to make nice with other vamps!
Awesome fight sequence with Buffy, Angel, and Spike! It’s one of the bigger ones we’ve had in the series so far and the choreography with everyone moving and such is super cool.
What I get from this is that kicking ass cures heartache. Thank you, Spike, for this lesson.
CORDY FAKE OUT FUNERAL! Just to give all viewers a heart attack. How nice. And Buffy is too good a friend to just support Willow and not call her out for doing something bad. Though I guess Willo’s feeling really guilty about it all.
I wish I could hug Cordelia :(
!!! This scene!!!! It’s great that Buffy comes to a conclusion regarding hers and Angel’s relationship and how that was going. She’s very much aware she can’t fool herself into thinking things can go on as they were—it’s not fair to her and it’s not fair to Angel. It takes a lot of strength to take that step. It hurts, though.
Funny to think Spike, of all characters, is the one who ends the episode feeling better about love.

Just as Buffy enjoys a minute to revel in her S.A.T. scores and ponder her bright future, the underworld version of Sid Vicious, Spike, returns to Sunnydale a fallen man, a pathetic shell of his former self who has been left in the dust by his love Drusilla and is back to punish every one who is to blame, especially Angel. Meanwhile, Willow prepares a de-lusting spell to keep her and Xander's hormones in check during a double bowling date with Cordelia and Oz.I have no frame of reference for SAT scores and what counts as good or not, so this is an opening scene I’m unable to relate to! I do appreciate Cordelia asking what kind of moron would come back to Sunnydale and CUT there is Spike :D
