BtVS - 3.12: Helpless

Original Air Date: January 19, 1999
Writer: David Fury
Director: James A. Contner
For her upcoming 18th birthday, Buffy eschews her friends' offer of a big party, hoping to celebrate with quiet reflection and a traditional trip to the ice show with her father. But unbeknownst to Buffy, preparations are being made for a life-threatening rite of passage that drains the slayer of her powers and then entraps her with a powerful vampire foe that she must defeat in a defenseless state in order to pass the test.
And the episode starts with a huge amount of unresolved sexual tension as Buffy and Angel spar! Angel continues to be an awkward bunny by asking Buffy if she has any dates planned for her birthday. Apparently her father is coming to town!

Do crystals ever come up again? Aside from being used in spells etc by actual witches on the show? Why does Buffy need to learn about them?

Nice to see the playground where some kids died open for business. Something is up with Buffy getting dizzy and weak in the middle of slaying! Could it be low blood pressure?

(How many calories does Buffy have to eat to keep up with Slayer business, I wonder…)

Buffy tells Giles something is wrong and Giles… doesn’t immediately go figure out what’s going on. Hmmmmmm.

I do like the gang talking about Buffy’s birthday and Buffy getting to tell them about her birthday tradition with her dad. It’s nice to see a little teenage conversation that doesn’t necessarily involve monsters and the world ending. Willow telling Buffy she’s an adult now and can be drafted…. Willow, Buffy was drafted into war a few years before…

… Well, Buffy’s dad, that’s not cool at all. You could have at least called.

Hmmmm, men in an old house scheming against the Slayer. How wonderful.

IT HURTS MY HEART to have Buffy basically begging Giles to take her to the ice show in place of her FATHER. Giles ignoring her request is just :( He looks so damn stressed about the crystals, though… I WONDER WHY.

This is so so so wrong. So wrong. I hate it.

What the fuck at the dude throwing Buffy and literally no one but Willow stopping to help or even seeing it happen??????? I swear to fuck, Sunnydale.

Giles, you are a lying liar who lies.

“It’s been done this way for a dozen centuries.” IT DOESN’T MEAN IT’S A GOOD PROPER THING!!!! It’s wrong and traumatizing \o/

It would be an interesting thing if Buffy didn’t get her powers back. It’s not like she’s the only Slayer around… the Watchers Council would still have someone to fight against the forces of darkness while Buffy could live her normal teenage life since she’s died for the world once before.

Buffy just wants simple birthday presents like body parts and her powers and for the world not to end. Just girlie things.

This scene makes me sad. Buffy thinking her entire worth as a person is related to her status as the Slayer is heartbreaking. You’re worth it just by being alive and living your life, Buffy. That’s all it takes. You don’t need to offer some magical service to the world to be a human being.

Aaaahh, stalker Angel. So creepy.

I love that the Council is so damn incompetent things have already gone wrong. Hot take: what if you did away with this tradition and stopped putting your own members and Slayers in situations where they could DIE? So stupid.

The betrayal on Buffy’s face. I would have jumped on Giles and bit his face if it was me. FUCK THE COUNCIL.

It’s so fucking hurtful that we go from Buffy asking Giles to take her to the ice show because he’s legit her parental figure to Buffy asking him how he could do this to her. I just… once again, fuck the Council. The Slayers should unionize.

On the other hand: Cordelia, I love you.

Great of the Council to pick a vampire who was a despicable person before he was turned. Really, such good planning. Congratulations on your choices and decisions.

I am glad that Buffy is resourceful! That’s something from Buffy’s own character that has nothing to do with her being a Slayer. She’s quick on her feet and able to make snap decisions and help herself. Go Buffy!

Giles being fired is just… this is so fucking stupid. The Council are clowns. How does it make any sense for a Watcher to betray his Slayer in the way the test is set up? Their relationship suffers because it’s a break of trust. Unless the Council doesn’t at all want that trust in place and the purpose of this entire thing is to make sure Watchers are entirely under the Council’s thumb and will do what they’re told, no questions asked and fuck the Slayers. After all, Slayers don’t live that long. Why ruin a perfectly good Watcher by having him care about his charge. One more time: fuck the Council.

Anyways, I don’t like this episode and I’m glad it’s done :D
