BtVS - 3.13: The Zeppo
Original Air Date: January 26, 1999
Writer: Dan Vebber
Director: James Whitmore Jr.
I do like the confusing opening scene with Faith, Buffy, and Giles hiding while Willow does her witchy thing! I’m always here for more witchy Willow using magic to help with slaying demons. Team work!
Go Giles for not giving up work completely after being fired by the Council. Kind of weird that his sources have dried up and he doesn’t have any… outside people he can contact about supernatural shenanigans. One would think he would have made them, especially as the Ripper.
We’re once again met with the concept of Xander’s human fragility. While it’s good that they do have that contrast in the show, I’m not a fan of how that’s seen as something emasculating. At least from Xander’s perspective.
That was harsh, Cordelia. We didn’t need that.
Xander… Oz is cool because he doesn’t care about being and/or looking cool. That’s the secret. Also, a cultural note: popularity in the way its portrayed in USAmerican shows like in BtVS wasn’t a thing we experienced when I was in school? Sure, there were people who were considered popular because they had lots of friends, but others weren’t bullied and/or incredibly concerned about their social status. Because of that, I can’t relate to Xander’s concern over being perceived as cool/popular.
Oz is spot on when he says Xander has some identity issues.
Still can’t believe they use school library premises as the place to keep werewolf Oz locked up. No thinking about the future at all with that one.
I do love some alone Buffy and Willow scenes! I’m glad we had one where they don’t talk about boys and instead discuss the possible end of the world :D
Damn, I could really use a donut right now. And Xander, being in charge of snacks is one of the most important tasks when it comes to working as a group. Everyone needs brain fuel.
What kind of student walks around with a knife that size?????
Doesn’t it strike Xander as a bad idea at all to walk around with a dude who just raised the dead? He just… goes along with it? After all he’s seen and been through? Is that correct?
The spirit guides: nah go away.
Aw, Willy. You know, I don’t feel at all the gravity and tension the opening of the Hellmouth is supposed to give me. I think the split narrative here with Xander doesn’t work to make me take it as seriously as I should be—or maybe I shouldn’t take it seriously at all? They might have picked another problem to solve instead of the literal end of the world again.
????????????????????????????????? Xander and Faith??????????????????????????? I had entirely deleted this from my memory.
The episode does work to show that Xander can stand on his own, though. I really like that we see him take out the dead guys, even if it’s in a goofy and sometimes accidental way. He can think on his feet and keep himself alive while doing it. It’s also a positive that he seems way more settled in himself at the end of the episode. I don’t think the quiet confidence lasts long, but I’m going to take this as positive character development.

Xander's lack of slaying superpowers has him feeling painfully expendable, but his quest to prove he's cool leads him to an unforgettable night that finds him consorting with fast women, raising the dead and rolling with a dangerous crowd that could put Sunnydale in a world of hurt. Meanwhile, Buffy, Giles and the rest of the crew engage in a furious battle with an all-female apocalypse cult that intends to reopen the Hellmouth and bring about the end of the world.Another episode I have little to no memory of!

My memory is that he knows it's a bad idea, but he's maybe looking for new friends and then is quite rapidly freaked out but not sure how to leave/scared to leave? But I haven't seen it in ages so I might be totally wrong!
