BtVS - 3.20: The Prom
Original Air Date: May 11, 1999
Writer: Marti Noxon
Director: David Solomon
This beginning is too sappy for me. Angel staring at Buffy sleep while smiling softly? No, thank you! Also, this scene really brings the vampire age gap thing into play: Buffy is too young to be talking about having a drawer at her older boyfriend’s place and Angel is too old to be considering prom.
Demon Anya who has been alive for over a millennia having to go back to high school and think about getting a date for prom? True hell scenario. Gross mention of Xander staring at Anya’s breasts when they talk. And… why is Xander arguing about going to prom with Anya when he obviously doesn’t have a date and she’s clearly asking him to go with her? C’mon, Xander.
I have no memory of Joyce’s visit to Angel! Her catching sight of the cuffs: oh no. Damn, and she goes there to remind him that Buffy is from one world and he’s from another, more vampire-y world. The show is really hammering the differences and difficulties in their relationship. None of this came up before why?
More information about the Ascension! And this a bunch of questions without answers. I, once again, really like the contrast between real life stuff (prom) and evil stuff (the end of the world).
What the hell kind of demon is that? Why don’t I remember half of this episode?
Aw, an Angel/Buffy wedding! Buffy’s dress is so round lmao I don’t hate it. Did not expect her to burst into flames! Again, I have zero memory of this place.
How lovely to have a discussion about their relationship and the fact that Angel is immortal while Buffy is very much a human teenager when they're in the SEWER. I do agree with Buffy that she’ll never have a normal life, but Angel just stopping to think about the consequences of their relationship and what it can mean to Buffy after YEARS of them being together is baaaad. He’s the adult! He has been the adult for over 200 years!
Angel is leaving. For his spin-off show.
SMG’s acting is so good, though. I really feel for Buffy getting her heart broken again by Angel. It is good that Buffy recognizes that he’s right and has Willow supporting her through it. Sometimes we refuse to see what’s right in front of us because we desperately want this to work out, but that’s not how the world works :/
This does give me flashbacks to my first big break up. I do not like it and it is upsetting.
Ah, Xander finds out about Cordelia having to work for a living! Of course they get attacked by that demon dog I forgot all about.
… that’s a hell hound???? A hell hound???? A hell hound.
Tucker Wells! No memory of him and his subplot either.
Piss off, Angel. You don’t get to break up with your teenage girlfriend and tell her you miss her. Go Buffy for making sure her friends and classmates have a good prom even though hers is the worst right now.
“I understand that this sort of thing requires… ice cream of some kind.” Giles, sometimes you’re a sweetie pie.
Wesley, what kind of school did you go to. Also: leave Cordelia alone!!! She’s a teenager and you’re an adult man!!! It doesn’t matter that she’s 18!!!! Go away!!!!!
Little glimpse of Jonathan with a date! :D
Sunnydale seniors really are “this might as well happen” at this point.
Okay, this is when I cry. I have never, not once, not cried when this scene hit. I’m already tearing up. “Is Buffy Summers here tonight?” That’s it I’m gone.
They are such rare moments when Buffy gets thanked for what she does. To have the senior class take the time to create a new award category specifically made to recognize that Buffy is the one to stand between them and evil? That she’s the one who is always there to save them? It’s one of my favorite scenes in the entire show. I always always always get so choked up with feelings and emotions because here is Buffy having the confirmation that what she does is important and makes a difference.
BUFFY SUMMERS CLASS PROTECTOR (CHILLS CHILLS CHILLS)
Giles, do not encourage the man.
ANGEL. WHAT ARE YOU DOING. You know, the first time I watched this episode I thought it was super sweet that Angel showed up to dance with Buffy at prom. As an adult? You broke up with her. You broke her heart. You’re still leaving after this. LEAVE HER ALONE. LET HER MOVE ON.
At least Buffy got a dance out of it, I guess.
Anyways, next episode: GRADUATION, HELL YEEEAAAAHHH!!!
Vampires Slayed: 1.

Spring has definitely sprung in Sunnydale as talk turns to all things Prom, and while Buffy and Angel grapple with the impossibility of a future together, she is determined on keeping a villain intent on crashing the Prom from ruining her friends' perfect high school moment. Meanwhile, a chance encounter between Xander and Cordelia may have reopened their lines of communication, but he is saddled with a demonic Prom date, while Cordy only has eyes for the new watcher Wesley.Happy 26th anniversary to this episode! \o/

Yes, yes, yes to all of this! It's one of my favourite moments in the whole show as well.

And on Wesley/Cordelia!! I get Giles is trying to be a good friend and all, but heck, turn him onto an ADULT!!! Not a kid who he KNOWS already has a world of trouble of her own and no real friends! She's ALREADY in a bad and vulnerable place! She does NOT need a h0rny, adult man chasing after her, especially not now!!!
Which brings me full circle to the other shocking thing -- how did we NOT already see how horrible Joss was with so many "romances" with adult men chasing after young girls in very vulnerable positions????
I also agree: I cry every time with this moment too, and the Prom and the gift of the golden parasol and the ACKNOWLEDGMENT is one of the BEST episodes in the ENTIRE series!!!!!! <3 <3 <3
