BtVS - 3.21: Graduation Day Part I
Original Air Date: May 18, 1999
Writer: Joss Whedon
Director: Joss Whedon
We’ve reached another BtVS season finale! I don’t think I need to say this is another one of my favorite episodes/finales in the entire series. :D
Of course we start with graduation stuff! Cordelia, obviously, is very upset about the color of their graduation gowns. Is this something that’s standard? Like, it has to be the school colors or something?
This entire thing is another cultural question mark to my person. We don’t do yearbooks and don’t ask people to sign them. All I know about the popularity/social implications of this ritual comes from teen shows and movies. I am glad to see Harmony, though!
It is a good plan from the Mayor to snack on a bunch of graduating high school kids. They’re all going to be there anyway, all organized and sitting down. Easy prey.
Oh hey… Faith just outright killing a person. Okay. Alright.
The Mayor is pretty good at pep talks… if only they weren’t evil. Also, Faith in that pink dress does look weird! Really pretty, sure, but weird as heck.
Glad to see a teacher going for hangman is a strategy used all over the world to occupy class time after finals are all done lmao I do that with my groups when all grades have been submitted, but we’re still stuck going to class because the school year isn’t technically over.
… why did no one consider (me included) asking the 1000+ years old demon, Anya Jenkins, about the Ascension??? One would think that someone who’s been around for that long might have knowledge.
My competency kink activates in that fencing scene with Giles reading the newspaper and fending off Wesley. Just *chefs kiss*
Ooooohhhhh, we get to know there are hybrid and pure demons. I had no memory of this little tidbit of world-building.
Oh, Snyder. You will be repaid alright.
The Mayor legit doing what I’ve been expecting for the entire 3 seasons of Buffy at this point: just walking into the SCHOOL LIBRARY and catching the gang talking about KILLING DEMONS while their OCCULT BOOKS are spread all over the table. Honestly. Honestly!!! I can’t even be mad at him for it.
Don’t talk to Giles about eating his daughter!!!! Go Giles!!!!!!!
Still baffles me that Joyce hasn’t learned to take Buffy’s warnings about doing/not doing things seriously. I know Buffy is her daughter, but she’s also the Slayer. She has an inside into the evil happenings of Sunnydale. If she tells you to leave town, you at least need to stop and listen without making jokes about it first. I do appreciate that Joyce makes it clear that she wants to stay with Buffy, though.
I do love!!!! this scene between Willow and Oz. I love that Willow is comfortable enough to share her panic, even if she misunderstands Oz’s calm facade as him not caring about what’s happening, and how he reacts to it. Teenage and adult me still swoon!
Ugh, Angel and Buffy arguing. Again. We don’t need this.
I had totally forgotten Angel gets hit! Faith with the good crossbow aim, damn. AND SURE IT’S POISON!!!!
Aaaaawwwww, Willow and Oz <3
I’VE BEEN WAITING FOR BUFFY TO TELL THE COUNCIL TO FUCK OFF!!!!! Why keep obeying people who not only don’t help you when you need it, but actively put you in danger by keeping secrets and not sharing pertinent information?
“I like to think of it as a graduation.” HELL YEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAHHHHHH
Of course the cure for Angel’s poison is to drain the blood of a Slayer. Of course. Why not. Not at all surprised Buffy’s mind went straight to Faith!
The amount of tension between Buffy and Faith!!!! I’m here like: just kiss! It is an interesting choice re Buffy’s clothes. She’s come after Faith, dressed similarly as her, after she’s made up her mind to kill Faith if necessary. Their conversation about Buffy reminding Faith she’s mentioned Buffy is just like her completes the scene.
“Give us a kiss.” WHAT DID I SAY???? Just kiss, girls. The fight choreography in this super long scene is amazing, though!!! It’s so dynamic and it really shows what these two characters are capable of. They’re equals when it comes to strength and I love that we got to see them go at each other like this.
A poop joke??????????????????????????????????????
Oh, Buffy…. You did it. :/

Joyce: What, is some terrible demon going to attack the school?
Writer: Joss Whedon
Director: Joss Whedon
As Buffy, Willow, Xander, Oz and Cordelia ready for their long-awaited graduation day, the Mayor makes preparations for his Ascension and transformation into pure demon at the climax of his commencement address to the Class of 1999. With the fate of the world in true peril, Buffy is distracted from her purpose when Angel is weakened with a lethal poison, and it's slayer against slayer when Buffy faces Faith for what may be the last time.Happy anniversary to this episode!
