BtVS - 1.11: Out of Mind, Out of Sight

Original Air Date: May 19, 1997
Writer: Joss Whedon, Ashley Gable, Thomas A. Swyden
Director: Reza Badiyi
Buffy and Cordelia become unlikely allies to combat an invisible spirit that has targeted Cordelia and everyone around her. Meanwhile, Angel goes to Giles to warn him that Buffy could be in grave danger.
We’re getting a lot of Cordelia in this episode, so the top scene is her walking through Sunnydale High halls and talking about how much she loves Spring! Only to be interrupted by Buffy dropping her entire bag contents on the floor—second time Buffy has done this during the season. One would think she’d be less clumsy as the Slayer and with the amount of weapons she carries with her.

It is nice to know that Cordelia, at least in this episode, shows she cares about her studies and bothers with her assigned reading and making sure her essay is going well. Even if she’s the most self-centered about her points.

It was nice knowing you, Mitch! I do think the bat effects still mostly hold up today. It doesn’t look that fake at all.

We have another glimpse of Buffy struggling with the life she left behind in LA and how different it is from her life in Sunnydale in terms of popularity and school things. It’s a bit hard to watch since she seems so sad about it :(

Kind of weird for Giles to just sit down at a table in the cafeteria… Is that normal USAmerican HS teacher behavior?

And Harmony gets pushed down the stairs! Principal Snyder was there so fast. Does he just walk around waiting for an accident to happen? I guess he’s worried about the school getting sued lol

It’s pretty clear there’s an invisible girl walking around and taking revenge on those they don’t like. And there are two guys in black suits standing by a tree when the gang gets to the conclusion!

Everyone, including the audience, now has to work on listening to what’s going on! That’s a good way to amp up the tension and keep us guessing. Even more so when Giles goes ahead and asks “Who’s there?” Scream was already out by then and we kneeeeew that was a dangerous thing to ask.

LMAO ANGEL LURKING and having no reflection!

Giles totally cool with Angel being in love with Buffy. How nice. Not one question asked or comment made.

Angel is once again serving the part of harbinger of doom by warning Giles that something’s up with the Master and everyone should get ready. We also have mentions of existing and lost books on Slayer lore!

I do appreciate Angel giving a new perspective to the being invisible thing. Most people would think that’s a cool power to have, but then not to be able to see yourself? It must be awful.

With a flashback, we know who the invisible girl is (Clea DuVall)! It’s so awkward and sad to watch her try to interact with Cordelia and her friends. Part of being a teenager is about trying to find a place to belong to and that can be such a tough journey.

Buffy calling Cordelia “Cordy”. Hmmmmm, interesting.

Guys in suits show up again!

Buffy finally connects a name to the invisible face: Marcie Ross. She also finds Marcie’s secret hideout when she goes to investigate. I do wonder how Marcie got all of those things up there? She’s invisible, but those things are not. But if she’s living at the school, all she has to do is wait until night falls and she’s all good?

ALSO! If she’s living there and she’s invisible: has she been listening in to all the Slayer convos in the library? Has she witnessed all the vampire activity happening at the school after the day is over?

Is the “have a nice summer” thing true???? Is that what y’all write in people's yearbooks when you don’t know them???????

Okay, it’s so interesting to me that you can have classmates you never notice and don’t remember. That’s so different from where I live—I knew all of my classmates and some students from other groups and grades too. In a sense, it gives more weight to the episode and how ignoring people and not making an effort to interact with them can negatively affect them. And it makes me reflect as a teacher too and on how to always make efforts to include everyone.

Cordelia going to Buffy when she realizes someone is after her is EVERYTHING! Even if it’s because she’s hoping Buffy is in a gang lol It shows she pays attention to things despite how self-centered she is.

And we also have a new perspective on loneliness and popularity from Cordelia. Just because she’s surrounded by people, it doesn’t mean she never feels alone. It makes Buffy think about some things regarding her own life and I think that settles her a little bit.

Cordelia and Buffy are captured by Marcie! And we hear about her plan to give Cordelia a face no one will ever forget. She also confirms she knows Buffy is the Slayer!

Buffy telling Cordelia to shut up so she can work on listening is so funny. I do like that we have Buffy using her other senses instead of relying only on what she can see with her eyes.

Guys in suits are from the FBI! To learn that they “recruit” invisible students to work for them is so wild. And then this never gets mentioned again :D

Man, I love first season Cordelia. (I love every season Cordelia, but 1st season is special).

Is the “have a nice summer” thing true???? Is that what y’all write in people's yearbooks when you don’t know them???????

In the late 90s? Absolutely.

With a flashback, we know who the invisible girl is (Clea DuVall)!

OMG I forgot that was Clea DuVall!

Cordelia going to Buffy when she realizes someone is after her is EVERYTHING! Even if it’s because she’s hoping Buffy is in a gang lol It shows she pays attention to things despite how self-centered she is.

Yessssss. I loved this ep for that.
