Original Air Date: September 29, 1997
Writer: David Greenwalt, Joss Whedon
Director: John T. Kretchmer
Parent-teacher night: another cultural thing I can’t relate to because it doesn’t exist where I live. I take it it could be very tense for all involved?
The ultimate jinx! Thank you, Xander. We all know not to open our mouths and say nothing bad will happen. That’s when stuff happens!
I have SUCH VIVID MEMORIES of that car running over the Sunnydale sign. Spike’s introduction was such a “oh wow :O” moment to younger me lol The season suddenly got super exciting!
I keep forgetting the Anointed is still around… At this point I don’t even remember what happens to him.
SPIKE AT WOODSTOCK. TRIPPING BALLS. Please.
It’s great that the one thing they establish about Spike from the get go is that he has killed Slayers before. That’s such a huge part of his entire character arc throughout the many seasons of the show and it’s nice to know it’s been there from the beginning.
DRU, MY LOVE! Another wonderful character introduction! Juliet Landau’s entire performance here is so so so good. The Drusilla voice! The facial expressions! She can be so morbid and so sweet at the same time, I love it.
Aaahh, the mom guilt trip from Joyce. I have a hard time liking her sometimes.
Okay, so the Night of St Vigeous is like a crusade for vampires. Good to know! I don’t think it’s ever mentioned again throughout the series…
Shoutout to Nickelt for being this episode’s band!
So weird to be studying at a club… bar… night place space. And this is also another moment of Buffy showing us that a boy is more important than school. Lovely!
The white girl dancing with the arms up like you're handcuffed! A true cultural staple that still exists today :D
Spike also shows himself to be a lurker, though at least he doesn’t stick to the shadows like Angel does. It’s his first view of Buffy as the Slayer and there’s a lot of intense staring from him.
And Buffy and Spike officially meet! With a promise from Spike to kill her. You bet, my dude lmao
Okay, that quick scene between Spike and Sheila gives me so much iiiick.
Kind of weird for Giles not to know who Spike is when he’s killed Slayers before. One would think watchers would keep a list of vampires who did that and were still around.
Angel is back with the cryptic warnings! And leaving before he can expand on that!
This multi-purpose library: you can study, you can make weapons, and you can cut veggies! No one from the school staff will ever catch you.
For someone who doesn’t trust students, Snyder did leave Buffy with basically no oversight. She could have poisoned the punch and he wouldn’t have known.
Willow telling Cordelia to have some (awful) lemonade. I looove when we get little bits of Willow being the most petty. She comes across as such a good and sweet person, but she has layers and flaws.
First time we hear Spike’s other name: William the Bloody! And Giles finally figures out Spike has been killing Slayers for a while despite being younger than Angel. I still think this is information Giles should have known about as soon as he heard Spike’s name.
And vampires attack parent-teacher night! I think this is the second(?) time Joyce is faced with vampires in such an obvious way. It’s an interesting contrast to have her non-reaction when Buffy climbs into the vents while Giles insists on going out and fighting because he’s responsible for Buffy.
I do love how tense this entire sequence of events is. We have contained spaces (school classrooms) and people outside of the supernatural world dealing with everything in a way we haven’t before? At least while actively trying to keep the supernatural a secret—and with no cover-up aftermath yet.
Angelus! I get such whiplash from Angel in this scene sldfjlsdf he’s suddenly so smiley and happy, even if it’s pretend. THAT ANNE RICE ROUTINE! An intriguing point is knowing Angel used to have friends and Spike was one of them. And we find out Angel is Spike’s sire! That brings up so many questions!
Finally, a physical fight between Buffy and Spike! They’re pretty evenly matched and I like the cuts to Angel and Xander and the parents leaving. Joyce having a moment of doubt and coming back to get her daughter is amazing! Especially when she hits Spike :D
Hmmmm a little scene of Principal Snyder talking to the cops and agreeing on the cover-up: gang-related, PCP. Does he really know the truth? Guess we’ll find out!
Poor Willow and Cordelia, forgotten in the closet.
I’m sorry, but Spike grabbing that kid and throwing him in a cage is so damn funny to me sdfjskdfjskdfhk Spike really said: fuck them kids. What a note to end the episode on.

Spike: Me and Dru, we’re moving in.

When parent-teacher night is interrupted by uninvited guests, Buffy must protect her fellow students, the principal and her mother while keeping her secret. Meanwhile, Angel's old friends, Spike and Drusilla visit Sunnydale for The Night of Saint Vigeous — the holy night of attack.Principal Snyder sets the tone right from the get go! I do think it’s unfair that Buffy keeps getting blamed for the school fire when that happened somewhere else. She didn’t burn any buildings down in Sunnydale!

I'd agree! It feels like they didn't really know what to do with her character at the time since she wasn't supposed to know anything.
I think a lot of people knew things were going on, but were either largely in denial or part of the cover-up.
I would have like to see more about people being involved in the cover-up :(
