BtVS - 2.06: Halloween

Original Air Date: October 27, 1997
Writer: Carl Ellsworth
Director: Bruce Seth Green
Buffy, Willow and Xander are recruited by Principal Snyder to trick-or-treat with the neighborhood kids, but the night doesn't turn out as they had planned when Buffy's costume causes her to lose her slaying ability and the other kids transform into their costume characters. Meanwhile, when Giles begins to paste together the night's events, he learns that it's his past that is making this a very haunted Halloween.
Iconic episode! And the first of the very few Halloween episodes we have in the show.

We start with Buffy slaying in the pumpkin patch while some other vampire dude has problems with his very modern video camera. I do wonder what led Buffy to patrol the pumpkins?

Okay, I have a huge soft spot for Angel and Cordelia and seeing them make each other laugh in Season 2! warms my heart. I do wish this didn’t cause Buffy any jealousy and heartbreak, though. She deserves better.

And Buffy once again feeling the conflict between the normal life she so wants and her slayer duties. Angel should have done more to assure her it’s totally okay she thinks about beheadings during their date considering he’s a VAMPIRE who has beheaded people before!

A cultural question: is volunteering to take kids out for trick or treating a real thing? I have no kids, but I wouldn’t trust them to random high schoolers…

Ugh, Xander.

“Boys are so fragile.” WILLOW YOU ARE SO RIGHT

Just two girlies doing things they shouldn’t in the name of LOVE. Who hasn’t snuck into places with their bestie to find out things about boys? :D

Buffy, how are you so bad at lying to Giles??? “A hunk of burning something or other.” PLEASE lie better to your Watcher.

Buffy: it must have been wonderful to have no rights and no bodily autonomy and also great gowns, beautiful gowns.

SPIKE AND DRUSILLA ARE BACK! Not sure if I’m a fan of Spike calling himself Daddy…

It’s so interesting that nothing happens on Halloween right up until the point where everything happens on Halloween. I do wonder if part of them establishing this right during Season 2 was so creators wouldn’t get stuck to writing Halloween episodes every October. This left them room to play with other plot points.

Pretty clear that something is going to be up with the costumes! Willow’s Boo ghost costume was so good, though.

OZ IS ALSO BACK! And bumping into Ghost WIllow!

… do shitty people really give out toothbrushes for Halloween? Can they be sued? Can you toilet paper their houses?

THEY’RE CHANGING INTO THEIR COSTUMES! This is pretty good since we get to see Acting from everybody as they change from their regular personalities to something else. I really enjoy how Xander goes from :D to >:( so quickly.

LJLSKDJFLSDF BUFFY FAINTING also I would have LOVED if she dressed up like Xena! That would have been amazing.

Defenseless and helpless Buffy out there, lost! Spike recruiting little demon children to help him is kind of… sweet lol

GILES KNOWS ETHAN AND ETHAN CALLS HIM RIPPER! I remember being so :O at this revelation. What was going on? Why Ripper? What do we NOT KNOW?

Angel really just… picking Buffy up in his arms.

It’s the most intriguing to have someone come in and challenge the image we have of Giles! Even more so when in previous episodes Giles showed himself to not be a Ripper-like figure at all. I guess they finally figured out a backstory for him!

Spike has his hands on defenseless Buffy, oh no! Don’t appreciate him slapping her like that. Also, he might have been successful in killing her if he didn't decide to play with his food :B

Aaaawww, Willow being comfortable with herself! I really like and appreciate that the message from this episode was for people to embrace who they are and be comfortable with themselves—and that we shouldn’t have to change anything for other people!
