BtVS - 2.10: What’s My Line? Part II

Original Air Date: November 24, 1997
Writer: Marti Noxon
Director: David Semel
In this conclusion of a two-part episode, Buffy reluctantly confronts Kendra the new vampire slayer, only to find that the two are polar opposites in every way. Much to Buffy's chagrin, she must join forces with Kendra to save the man who means the most to her — Angel. Meanwhile, with Buffy on the hunt, Xander and Cordelia are left to wait at Buffy's home where they have a close encounter of their own kind.
I didn’t mention this in the last episode, but I do love the implications of another Slayer being called when the Master killed Buffy! It makes all the sense in universe that that would happen, but then it also begs the question of how efficient the Watchers Council communication is??? For Giles not to let them know about Buffy. And also! That this situation has never happened before? So they have no procedure in place for dealing with 2 Slayers.

It’s also very interesting to see the big contrast between Buffy and Kendra as Slayers! Kendra, at least from these initial scenes, seems very duty-focused to the point where she has no friends and no one knows her secret. Buffy, on the other hand…

Kendra also does seem to be well informed! She knows who Angelus is, even though her information is a bit out of date.

Willy saving Angel! Who would have thought? Oh, nevermind lol He had second intentions!

Cordelia and the worm man talking about lipstick shades! I’m also someone who doesn’t do worms, so I totally understand Cordelia in this scene.

… Drusilla calling Angel a very bad daddy. Sounds a lot different today than it did back then.

Okay, but Giles’ big grin while Kendra is talking about having read things and studying as part of being a Slayer because it’s required is so damn funny. I do like that this little scene shows people have different ways of learning stuff, though.

Super interesting point Buffy makes while talking to Willow about letting Kendra take over as the Slayer! We know being the Slayer and wanting a normal life is a big conflict Buffy deals with throughout the entire show, pretty much, so to know that in Season 2 she had the opportunity to let someone else do the job? Amazing!

LMAO CORDELIA AND XANDER! The power of hate!

Oz and Willow as they begin is pretty cute, though. Also, I had absolutely no memory of the circumstances in which Oz gets shot. And another thing that is pretty relevant to mention is that this is a ‘97 episode with an assassin inside a school who opens fire without hesitating. That’s not at all something we’ve seen on TV in the past 20+ years without the context of school shootings/massacres.

The Gang finds out that to restore Drusilla’s strength, Angel must die! It took a while for the show to fully come out with the plan to get her back her powers. At least Buffy and Kendra decide to work together to stop this from happening.

It is Drusilla’s turn now to torture Angel! I can’t even be mad. I think she deserves a little bit of payback after everything.

“There are 43 churches in Sunnydale? That seems a bit excessive.” Oh, Giles… if only you knew… Also he’s really adding to the “taking off/putting on glasses” count for this episode.

A little bit of world-building making itself known through Kendra coming from a culture where children are given to the Watchers Council? How do they realize who has the potential to become a Slayer? Do they only take one kid at a time? How does it work?

Drusilla and Angel tied together… a visual!

I do love when the Gang shows up to help Buffy save the day! And this time with Kendra tagging along :D Willow jumping on that vampire’s back and then dusting Giles’ off is my favorite little bit of this fight scene.

LMAO BUFFY HITTING SPIKE ON THE HEAD WITH THE THING I DON’T KNOW THE NAME OF SLDFJLSFJLSJDFLF

The church burns down and it is very obvious we haven’t seen the last of Spike and Dru yet! And then we have a little moment between Willow and Oz (cute!) and Cordelia and Xander (tense!). And it’s sweet that Buffy and Kendra come to sort of an understanding about themselves and what it means to be the Slayer.
