BtVS - 2.14: Innocence
Original Air Date: January 20, 1998
Writer: Joss Whedon
Director: Joss Whedon
There’s so much suspense around what’s happening with Angel in the opening scenes of the episode. We have a smiling Dru, which doesn’t bode well, and Angel suddenly attacking a woman when that isn’t like him at all.
I remember watching this episode for the first time and being so heartbroken at the unfairness and angsty of it all! As an adult with a little more perspective and life experience, I can’t help but see this episode as Buffy being thrown into a terrible situation where she gets punished for having sex with someone for the first time :)
Angel(us) leaves her all alone after an incredible intimate moment. She still needs to deal with all of the Judge shenanigans and… Jenny lurking around because she has a Job To Do.
Of course Angelus somehow finds Drusilla and Spike right away and joins them! We get confirmation from the Judge that there is no humanity left in him. I do appreciate the differences in acting from David Boreanaz here; Angel and Angelus have very distinct personalities and he’s able to explore that well.
It’s so sad, personally, that we also get confirmation from Angelus himself that Buffy made Angel feel like a human being while they were together. This is why we can never have nice things.
And the Xander/Cordelia cat is out of the bag! Of course Willow is the one to catch them making out between the stacks. Not sure how I feel about her pointing out that Xander would rather be with someone he hates than with her… We don’t choose who we’re attracted to, but we can choose not to keep things from our friends.
Ugh, I hate hate hate this scene between Angelus and Buffy. I hate it. I hate it so much. It still hurts my feelings so many years later because it was so obviously a punishment towards Buffy for daring! to have one moment of happiness with someone she loves.
We all know the Slayer doesn’t deserve to be happy :)
There’s the explanation about Angel’s curse and his soul! I agree with Jenny that we’re all fools.
Angelus obviously does after those Buffy holds dearest. Good on Xander for his dislike towards Angel being useful for once! I still hate this scene and how Jenny is related to it.
Willow is such a good friend to Buffy. I always love these quiet moments between them when we have them check in with and support each other.
Not a fan of Jenny keeping from the Gang why Angel is now Angelus. I understand this is her keeping her cover, but they have bigger and meaner things to worry about than her fake identity.
We can always count on Buffy’s ability to put things together, though!
I really like the follow up with Xander and the Halloween episode. I wish we could have seen more of it from him. And Willow and Oz continue to be so damn cute to me.
There is nothing quite like the rage of teenage girls \o/
Yikes at the “get out” directed at Jenny. Understandable, however, considering the Mess all of this caused. Buffy’s surprise at Giles standing with her makes my heart hurt.
“That was then. This is now.” has “I am no man” energy. I will not be convinced otherwise.
Buffy thinking Giles must be disappointed in her because “this is all her fault” aka because she had sex for the first time with someone she loved. No! Delete this narrative!
Buffy did not act harshly by doing something she was ready for out of her own free will and without any pressure from others. Sure, there is a discussion to be had about her being a teenager and Angel being a grown man + teenagers and informed consent, but it’d be disingenuous of anyone to say teenagers out there aren’t having sex. They are, just like Buffy did, and in situations like these they shouldn’t, especially girls!, be punished for it. And this is why I dislike this episode so much as an adult.
Joyce: What did you do for your birthday? Did you have fun?

Writer: Joss Whedon
Director: Joss Whedon
After Buffy shares an intimate moment with Angel which extinguishes his human soul, she is left with the realization that she must destroy the now-evil Angel who has transformed into his previous persona of Angelus. Meanwhile, Giles' relationship with Jenny Calendar takes on a new twist when he discovers that she is a member of the gypsy family who gave Angel his human soul, and Willow's hopes of a relationship with Xander are dashed when she discovers Xander and Cordelia's secret romance.Another icon episode that, upon rewatching, I dislike :B
