BtVS - 2.16: Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered

Original Air Date: February 10, 1998
Writer: Marti Noxon
Director: James A. Contner
When Cordelia succumbs to peer pressure and breaks off her tryst with Xander, on Valentine's Day, he convinces a witch to put a spell on Cordelia which will make her fall in love with him. But when the spell backfires, the women in Sunnydale, except Cordelia, and including Buffy and Drusilla begin to see Xander in a whole new light.
Another episode I have mixed feelings about! This is pretty Xander-centric; I’ll admit he’s not my favorite character, so I’m inclined to be bothered by an episode that focuses so much on him and his… thoughts about certain things. But let’s go!

I hate that the teen bullying dynamics here are so realistic. I know being a teenager is all about figuring yourself and your identity out etc etc, but the pack mentality and peer pressure and fear of not fitting in??? Causes so much heartache at times. I can’t help but feel bad for Cordelia here.

Amy! She’s back! And using witchcraft to get out of school assignments!

Okay, I think Giles and Jenny should sit down and have a conversation about everything that’s between them and their (bad) decisions regarding certain topics so they can clear things out and BE TOGETHER LIKE THEY WANT TO. Is it too much to expect out of grown adults?

Great way to introduce some tension with Giles warning Buffy about Angelus’ ways of fucking shit up during Valentine’s Day.

LMAO Spike and Angelus vs gift giving! Such contrast. It makes Spike look like the most romantic vampire out there.

Shoutout to this episode’s band (with the most insensitive name): Dingoes Ate My Baby!

Very ominous roses with a “soon” card. WHAT IS SOON? WHAT ARE YOU PLANNING, ANGELUS? I’m asking for real. I have little memories of this episode aside from my mixed feelings about it.

This Cordelia and Xander scenes makes me so sad. I do feel for Xander so much with what he goes through here as Cordelia caves and breaks up with him. I do want to believe (seeing as I teach HS) that teenagers, at least where I live, don’t really behave like that anymore. They let each other date whoever.

Do not forgive him for approaching Amy, however! Spells that walk all over people’s free will are just not right. Even more so when doing it for revenge!

The necklace locker scene :((((

Here I am getting huge mega yick feelings as we see how the love spell backfired. HUGE MEGA YICK FEELINGS.

Oh, rat Buffy. At least now you’re safe from Angelus.

Oz represents me in this episode. Thank you, Oz.

Drusilla grabbing Xander and referring to herself as Mommy… I don’t need this today.

Imagine everyone’s confusion at finding themselves in Buffy Summers’ basement with weapons and ready to attack two teenagers. Another situation to add to the list of things Sunnydale citizens decided to forget about so they can live and stay sane.

The conversation Buffy and Xander have about “the great roofie spirit”: ugh. The bar really is under the ground for boys and men to not be horrible human beings.

Cordelia realizing her worth and standing up for herself! We love that for her! And Xander, I suppose lol

And the Angelus’ Valentine’s Day Massacre Surprise was entirely forgotten. The End.

I still don't get how Xander was supposed to be a nerd when he looked and acted like nearly every guy I knew who dated girls like Cordelia. I went to high school with a Cordelia and Xander. I only heard criticism of it once, and that was more because "Xander" did something very stupid, meanwhile she was the Class President.

While the episode aged very poorly in many ways, I am always here for Cordy's growth. And she actively stands up to Harmony, rather than just not talking to her anymore, which I think she also deserves props for. It would've been so much easier to "ghost" her, as the kids say these days. But that was never Cordy's style.
