BtVS - 2.20: Go Fish
Original Air Date: May 5, 1998
Writer: Elin Hampton, David Fury
Director: David Semel
A bonfire! It’s cool that they’re bothering to change the setting from the usual places. Even if it means giving a tip that the bad guys this episode will have to do with the sea/water.
“I just like being around you” we’ve literally never seen you before, my dude. I do think the show could have made more of an effort to have Buffy interact with other students so there wouldn’t be such a huge disconnect like in this scene.
Oh hey! Wentworth Miller! In a turtleneck as a high school student?
Snyder pressuring Willow to change grades is giving me war flashbacks to some of the schools I worked at. Unfortunately, it’s a thing that still happens.
Cordelia showing her knowledge re USA presidents! Good for her!
CONCHATA FERRELL! So many known people in this episode, damn. Maybe that’s why I remember so much of it.
Okay, Cameron being disgusting: check. Okay, I’m going to skip the scene at the nurse’s office because it’s just going to make me angry and frustrated and I don’t want those feelings on a Sunday.
… How is Buffy so bad at being discreet when her literal Slayer life hangs on her being discreet and keeping secrets. Funny moments are only successful if they make sense!
Angelus appearance! Interesting that he took a bite out of Gage and spit out his blood. Buffy points out it could be steroids and how that fits with the swim team’s behavior.
Xander! In a tiny little speedo!
Okay, that’s SUCH a gross transformation from guy to fish. I LOVE IT! I’m here for more practical effects like that.
Good on the show for addressing the harm that steroids can cause. I do wish it had focused a little bit more on the impact on growing teenagers, but even so. I feel like that’s something not a lot of people talk about anymore.
HA Shane West! I recognize that voice anywhere.
Oh, turns out Coach and Nurse are in it together. Of course Coach would feed her to the team. They gotta win at any cost.
EXPERIMENTS WITH FISH DNA. This is so… bad lmao I know the show sometimes tackles plots that combine the supernatural with science/tech, but this is so bad.
Cordelia being a sweet girlfriend to her fish boyfriend <3
The resolution to the issue here is also pretty rushed. I do like the scene of Buffy fighting against the fish guys and Coach ending up as food, but eh… Just a couple of blood transfusions and everyone’s good?
And the Gang being totally okay with a bunch of fish guys who eat human flesh going back to the sea… sure makes sense.
Vampires Slayed: 0.
Series Total: 42.
Giles Taking Off/Putting On Glasses: 1.

When a monster starts preying on members of the high school swim team, Buffy takes it upon herself to become the protector of the star players. Meanwhile, Xander goes undercover to discover the truth about the missing teammates and ends up revealing a rarely seen side of himself.I have surprisingly vivid memories of this fish episode…

That said, with all its inconsistencies and strange moments (as you mentioned they just let the creatures get away; into the sea to do their worst?!), I enjoyed the episode, partly because of all the actors I recognize in it... Shane West, Jeremy Garrett (Sweet Valley High's Todd Wilkins #2 lol), Wentworth Miller, etc. And it didn't take itself too seriously. There was a lot of levity to be found. Also, it's one of the last episodes where I really liked Xander as a character. Season 3 is when he started to lose favor in my eyes. Plus, N.B. looked pretty good in a Speedo lol
Didn't so much care for the anti-woman coach and nurse but they got their just desserts, didn't they?
I can't wait to discuss the next episodes even as I know I'll be in a fetal position crying again lol

I definitely agree with that! Also welcome welcome :D
I think they needed a breather before absolutely slaying everyone with the heartbreak that was the finale.

Those are some of the best BtVS episodes imo <3

You're not crying alone!!!
