BtVS - 2.21: Becoming Part I

Original Air Date: May 12, 1998
Writer: Joss Whedon
Director: Joss Whedon
Buffy determines the time has come to destroy Angel and must ascertain if she is ready to sacrifice all she knows to be true to do so, but her decision is further entangled when Willow uncovers the secret that may restore Buffy's former beloved. Elsewhere, Angel chooses to unearth an evil demon that could swallow the earth and all of the beings, rather than return to the arms of his former lover.
We’ve finally reached Part I of one of the most memorable and iconic season finales of television!

The episode starts off with a flashback to Angel’s turning. The accent? Atrocious. Darls looks gorgeous as always as she prepares to change Angel’s life foreveeeeer ~

Of course we switch to Angelus lurking around the cemetery and watching Buffy fight. I still find it very interesting that Buffy’s Slayer senses don’t tingle when he’s around being a creep.

Oh my god, Giles, don’t touch the mysterious found objects with your bare fingers!!!! Have we learned nothing???

I do love scenes with the gang together and interacting in a non-library setting. It’s good to see they’re all pals—even with Cordelia being super harsh lol

And then we get more defining moments from Angel’s past! I also like when they give characters more backstory as a way to set something up in the future. We know how messed up everything is going to get, but even so.

(Angel does alright in the church, though? With all of the crucifixes and whatnot? Pls explain.)

I love Willow in this studying scene with Buffy! She stands up for herself while also making sure to let Buffy know she’s not stupid and should stop bringing herself down like that. Friends who can be firm about their boundaries and gently call you out? Amazing <3

A FLOPPY DISK. The tech of its time.

And we get the moment where Angel got his soul back! It all ties to the spell Jenny was working on to restore Angel’s soul. It’s good to have the others know about what she was doing before she was killed. Even more so with Willow offering to try her hand at magic!

Xander being a dick because of course.

Aaahh, the mysterious object WHISPERS.

KENDRA I MISSED YOU AND I’M GLAD YOU’RE BACK :D I love the dynamic between her and Buffy now that they’ve gone over the ‘two Slayers’ shenanigans. I wish we had seen them work together more often.

Angelus explaining what the mysterious object does! Of course it’s a pretty evil thing, as usual. “Every creature on this planet will go to Hell.” Isn’t that counter-productive? Who will vampires feed on if all of humanity is suffering (dying?) in Hell…

Aaaahh, the rope of vampires feeding on animals to avoid human blood. Gross, but great. Whistler is an interesting figure! Too bad we didn’t get much of him in the show. I do like that he’s the one who put Angel in his path, but I’m also going to ignore Angel creeping on Buffy outside of her High School :B

Getting to watch Buffy starting out as the Slayer is such a gem, though.

Hehehehe someone wasn’t worthy!

WELL that’s a totally normal thing to happen at a High School. Go Sunnydale.

Kendra having a lucky stake aka Mr. Pointy is SO CUTE PLS

Buffy and Angelus scenes always hurt. Especially because I know it doesn’t get better. I do like to watch them fight, however! With the cuts to Willow doing her magic thing and the library attack, it’s all very tense.

This Kendra vs Drusilla scene is so good and SO DAMN SAD. I do have questions about Buffy coming in running: where is everyone else? Did Xander manage to get Willow out from under the shelves? How did the police get called in? We just don’t know.

Next episode is my favorite BtVS episode ever and I am SO DAMN EXCITED for it :D

I finally got to rewatch this episode tonight and part 2. God, it's all so good! Kendra's death made me cry so much, even harder than usual. Maybe because I'm older now I am aware of just how precarious & precious life is. IDK. I, too, wish we got to see her and Buffy work together more. I really love the actress, she's gorgeous and just fierce and awesome.

Xander was being annoying and downright mean telling Buffy she only cared because she wanted her boyfriend back. Sheesh.

Buffy and Angel's fight scenes are so intense. SMG and DB always had great chemistry, no matter if they were Buffy/Angel or Buffy/Angelus or just being themselves.

Poor Willow getting book-shelved!! Cordy ran, poor girl. I look forward to her embracing her inner-girl warrior.
