BtVS - 2.22: Becoming Part II

Original Air Date: May 19, 1998
Writer: Joss Whedon
Director: Joss Whedon
The suspense continues as hell prepares to swallow the world and Buffy is left alone to stop it. With Giles in the hands of the enemy and Angel primed for destruction, our slayer is forced into some treacherous alliances and faced with life-changing decisions.
This is my favorite Buffy episode of all time and one of my favorite season finales of television of all time. No pressure :P

I have SUCH a physical reaction of PURE ANGER with this opening scene?? With adults just assuming Buffy is guilty of doing Literal Murder without letting her explain anything. Especially considering she’s a minor! I know this is written to add tension and complicate things for Buffy, but uuuuugggghhhhh.

Give your teenagers a chance!

Willow :(((( Even knowing she makes a full recovery, it’s so sad to see her in the hospital like that.

A cultural question: is it/was it normal for parents to go traveling and leave their teenagers alone?????

I love all of the layers of Angelus grabbing Giles to make his mysterious object wake up. They have so many bubbling emotions between them with Jenny’s death and how Angelus set that up to maximize damage to Giles’ everything. WE KNOW Giles wants to take revenge.

I HATE THE POLICE.

Also hate how it all comes back to Buffy having sex with someone she loves. Because girls having sex is to blame for all things. How dare girls.

Whistler telling Buffy that in the end she’s all she’s got and that’s the point: great set up for my favorite scene BUT ALSO—a huge lie. She’s got so many people in her corner and they always show up for her.

SPIKE! Saving the day??? Who woulda thunk it. Also another thing I love about this episode, tbh. LOYALTIES CHANGE TEMPORARILY. ENEMIES COMING TOGETHER.

Man U fan Spike I CAN’T BELIEVE I FORGOT THIS!!! Good on him for thinking about the feeding issue if the world ends. He’s totally in it for himself, but it’s so interesting when Slayer and vampire goals align like that.

Buffy’s in a rock band with Spike except SHE KILLS A VAMPIRE IN FRONT OF HER MOTHER. FINALLY. That leads to the funniest scene in the episode: Joyce and Spike sitting in the living room together in total silence. I love it.

I get why they wrote Buffy’s “coming out” like that and what it meant for TV at the time and the conversations people were(n’t) having. I didn’t like it the first time I watched it and I don’t like it now despite being glad it happened. As a queer person, the parallels only ever made me feel bad :B

We could have had Angelus in a tutu performing the ritual. We were robbed.

Buffy coming back to the scene of the crime is just… *sighs* I do like Snyder showing up and finally admitting out loud what we all know: Sunnydale police are stupid. I do not like him expelling Buffy out of sheer pettiness.

Drusilla using Jenny to torture Giles is the saddest thing :(((((( up until they lock lips and Dru says she was ~in the moment.

Xander making the decision not to tell Buffy about Willow trying to restore Angel’s soul again gives me conflicting emotions. On one hand: I’m glad he didn’t tell Buffy so she wouldn’t hesitate to do what had to be done. But on the other hand: I hate it because we all know it came from a place of jealousy and him wanting Buffy for himself

We know Spike’s been wanting to beat Angelus up for a long time lmao

THE REAL FIGHT WE’VE ALL BEEN WAITING FOR: BUFFY VS ANGELUS!

The cuts to Willow doing the spell to reverse Angel’s curse are!!! amazing!!! I love how we have this concrete moment of Willow connecting with magic and doing her first big spell. We know how important this journey is to her and I give credit to the writers for making this all so organic.

Of course the episode quote goes to my absolute favorite Buffy quote ever!!!! Just Buffy saying the word: ME.

And then we go to the most heartbreaking scene in all of BtVS after The Body episode: Angel getting his soul back. I am glad they had this little moment to say goodbye. I also have a question: if Angel’s blood closed the door, couldn’t they have just done the thing like he did when opened the gate? A little blood on his palm and the sword in the proper place and we’re all good and done? Did he have to GET STABBED?

Joyce cannot be surprised that Buffy left after what she said. She cannot.

It’s so sad and upsetting that Buffy did leave without talking to anyone. I know there’s a lot of guilt and she’s grieving, but :((( it’s such a sad point to end the season on and to have Buffy struggling like she is.

Anyways perfect episode I loved it always my favorite.
